What to Expect from Coaching

Many people think of their coach or the coaching structure as the solution to their problems. Or assume the coach is going to tell them what to do. That's not the case. While each coaching program is different, common elements exist. They also share some universal expectations.

What You Get
Before you start a coaching program, ask for details up front on:

  • Time commitments?
  • How will we interact?
  • How does the coach support in-between calls?
Make a list of your own questions, and get them answered. Coaches vary in expertise and focus. And they may not know to address your specific concerns without prompting from you.

Provide as much detail on your needs, aspirations and goals as possible. The coaching and action plans are only as good as the information you provide. Coaches are insightful but few, if any, are mind readers!

Expect support for any sticky situations that arise during your coaching agreement. This might be a laser session (short, to-the-point check-ins) via phone. Or via email and/or text messaging.

Ask for Feedback
To get the most from coaching, ask for and expect feedback on your performance. Coaches look at your behavior and actions (both taken and avoided) to refine your program. Every program should result in improvement. Even with the best coach, don't expect miracles, as success depends on your actions.

How To Get The Most From Coaching
Coaches ask lots of questions, and encourage you to align your actions with what you want. And most important of all, they listen. So come prepared to each coaching session, and make a listener's promise with yourself.

To start, think about how you are feeling. Notice what's happened since the last call. Identify what you're working on and how your coach can help.

Also, complete your assignments. Each week you'll decide on the actions or goals on which you want to focus. Coaches expect you to keep the commitments you make! They'll make sure you are setting worthwhile, realistic and achievable objectives. Your assignment might be as simple as thinking about the issue from a new perspective. If you have more time, you might decide to handle a big task. Regardless, coaches will hold you accountable and encourage you to do your best.

When there's a gap between where you are now, and where you want to be, coaching works. But only if you're willing to learn, grow and take action. That's all that's necessary for a successful coaching relationship.
